About

My primary research interest is in community-level strategies to improve health care access and safety, stemming from my clinical background in community and public health nursing. I am currently working on two large secondary data-analysis projects. The first explores racial, ethnic and gender disparities in post-surgical outcomes for older adults. The second project builds on my clinical background and extends research on the nursing practice environment into the community and home health care settings. This research project will be the first to utilize large datasets to understand how patient and nurse outcomes are impacted by modifiable elements of the nursing practice environment in community and home health care settings. The aims of the project are to revise the National Quality Forum endorsed Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index instrument for use in community and home health care settings, and to evaluate which features of the nursing practice environment are associated with nurse retention outcomes and improved outcomes for home health care patients in community settings.  Data analyses will incorporate advanced health services research methods including hierarchical linear/logistic modeling, instrumental variable analysis and propensity score matching.
